Training at GV Tailoring

APPRENTICESHIP & WORK EXPERIENCE

Our apprenticeship and work experience program is designed to help young people push their creative edge and increase their awareness of technologies available when it comes to fabrics and fashion world.
We believe learning new skills provide new creative opportunities for the youth to express themselves and also build their lives and become independent. This is why we run this program.
Beginners in garment making will learn skills and processes in garment construction. This includes:

  1.  cutting out patterns and fabrics arranging them together,
  2. fitting,
  3. stitching,
  4. pressing,
  5. the correct and safe use of tools and equipment,
  6. understanding and adapting commercially bought patterns and choosing styles & suitable fabrics.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN IN 6 WEEKS

You will sample a variety of techniques throughout the course and after a 6 week class you will be able to complete a simple dress, top, skirt or unstructured trousers.

Learners with considerable more experience may opt to make a more structured garment such as formal shirt, or lined skirt- and these can potentially be achieved in a 6 week class, particularly if you are able to work on these between the sessions.

More complex garments such as jackets or coats will naturally require considerably longer time to complete. Emphasis will be placed on pattern adaptation and fitting as well as ideas for creating professional finishes for garments using traditional and modern techniques including how and where to use canvas & fusible interfacing to create structure.

At GV FABRICS, we pride ourselves in making sure of trainees are given the best.
